Lum Mann Der, son of Foo and Mary Der passed away on November 27, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Towson Maryland after a short illness at the age of 81.
Lum Der was born on February 26, 1940 in Hong Kong, China. He immigrated to the USA when he was 8 years old and graduated from Poly Technical School in Baltimore, MD. Shortly after graduating, he worked for Bethlehem Steel and joined the Marine Reserves, where he earned the title of sharp shooter.
In 1965, he married Shirley in New York City. They raised their three children, Kenny, Sharon and Ray. In 1972, after the death of his father, they purchased Chung Mee Noodle Company from his mother. They closed the business when their children graduated college.
In 1996, Lum began working at CSX until his retirement in 2010. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family.
Lum is survived by his wife of 56 years Shirley; son, Kenny; daughter, Sharon (Patrick); son, Ray (Noel); 4 grandchildren Alyssa, Alyson, Ryan and Ethan; brothers, Chuck (Arlene) and Phillip (Stella); sisters, Helen and Rose (Louis).
Lum will forever be remembered for his big smile and hardy laugh. He was a resourceful man who never judged anyone, always willing to help others and lived life to the fullest. He will be sorely missed by all of friends, family, and all who knew him.
The outdoor memorial service with military honors will be held at 11:00 am on January 22, 2022 at Highview Memorial Gardens, 3433 Fallston Road, Fallston, MD.
