Obituary

Doris Jane Summerfield – March 1, 1944 – March 6, 2021

Doris Jane Summerfield, age 77, of Monkton entered her eternal Home on March 6, 2021. She was surrounded by her devoted daughter and her family.  She was the beloved wife of Robert W. Summerfield, who passed away in 2016.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 1, 1944, she was the daughter of James and Myrtle (Roddenberry) Myrick.  She spent her early years in old Baltimore, helping in her mother’s store, the “Beryl Avenue Sweet Shop,” taking the bus to piano lessons at Peabody, and attending the theatre.
Upon graduation from Eastern High School, she married in 1962.  Jane devoted her early married years to motherhood before entering the workforce.  After raising her children, she worked at several companies gaining expertise in medical benefits.  She earned a Bachelor degree from The College of Notre Dame in 2002, majoring in Business with a minor in Accounting.  She retired from Benefit Mall in 2016.

Jane’s life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 – “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”  Jane often verbalized the meditations of her heart and expressed her immense gratitude to her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was forever thankful for her Lord’s forgiveness and His free gift of salvation for all eternity that she received through faith in Him alone.  Throughout Jane’s life, she loved to study the Bible and was known by all as a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.  Jane faithfully served her Lord through her genuine and unceasing love for her family.  In addition, she also loved her church family well by serving as a Sunday School teacher for countless years, Awana assistant, and other various roles, always with a servant’s heart.

In her last days, she could be heard declaring His praises, often singing the timeless hymn “Blessed Assurance” –

 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
Oh what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood

This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long
This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long

Jane is survived by her sons, Steven R. (Susan) Summerfield, William S. Summerfield, and her daughter, Jodie C. (Chuck) Kelly.  She leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Jared (Sophia) Kelly, Morgan (Ethan) Wood, Robyn Summerfield, Madilyn Kelly, Sarah Summerfield, Grace Kelly, and Scott Summerfield.  She is also survived by a precious sister, Jimmie Lee Wood, and a dear brother-in-law, Jack Wood of Florida, and many loving nieces and nephews.
