Clara Helen ( Schmidt) Van Nemec June 28th, 1933 to August 30th, 2021


Clara Helen( nee Schmidt) Van Nemec, 88, of Bel Air, Maryland , passed peacefully, surrounded by family and friends at her “Home” on August 30th, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and complications of a fractured hip. Lovingly known as “ Clara Bell or Claire Bear” by her friends and staff at the Amazing Grace Assisted Living. She was the oldest daughter to Harry and Marie Schmidt, of Highlandtown, Md. Born June 28th, 1933.

Clara is survived by 2 daughters, 3 grandchildren, and 3 great-grand daughters, whom she loved and adored. Daughter, Gail Parr and Grandson David Reid of Jacksonville, Florida. Daughter Beth Schmitt and Husband Wayne Schmitt, of Bel Air, Md. Grandson Jason Schmitt of Jacksonville, Florida, Great-Grand daughter, Alexis (Lexi) Schmitt-Carr of Bel Air, Md. Grand daughter , Krista ( Schmitt) Lichtenberg and husband Andrew Lichtenberg, great-grand daughters, Ava Lichtenberg and Andrea (Andi) Lichtenberg of Bel Air, Md. She is predeceased by her first husband and father of her children, John Van Jr, and second husband Leonard Nemec.

Clara grew up in Highlandtown, Md. Attended and graduated Patterson High School ( class of 1951). She learned to play saxophone at an early age and played for Middle school and High school Marching band. With several of her girlfriends, they formed the “Queens of Rhythm” all girl Big Band. The group played together for over 20 years for Proms, events and weddings. John and Clara shared the love of music, especially jazz, swing and big band. They taught and shared their knowledge of music by teaching their children and grand children. Clara was active in the church, as their secretary and often taught in bible school. Her first career was a dental assistant but decided to change careers. She attended Union Memorial Hospital Nursing school program and graduated in 1969. Not finished with her education, at 35, attended Essex Community College(CCBC ) . She worked over 30 years at Union Memorial as a Special Care Nursery Nurse/ NIC Unit. She loved her job and loved working with the new born babies. When retired, she married her second husband, where they traveled to many places, and lived in Deep Creek, Md, Virginia, and finally settled in Ocean City, Maryland. She loved her home at the beach.

Clara came to live with her daughter Beth in the early spring of 2018 and in August 2018 she decided to live at Amazing Grace Assisted Living in Bel Air. She lived there the remainder of her life surrounded by many friends, family and loving staff. There she found peace, love, companionship, friendship and called it “home”. Clara shared her love of music, and zest for life to everyone she touched. “Clara Bell” made everyone laugh, and smile. She adored the staff, residents, and living there was the highlight of her life and lived her life to the fullest.


There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
